This is one of those dreaded endings where all club chess players know there is a win…but the dreaded truth is that we are unlikely to remember how to win over the board.
Whisper it quietly but some of us may have never known how to win it at all. So here is a quick exploration into this dangerous territory.
The first thing to remember is that the winning side can only mate in the corner of the same colour as the Bishop ie a8 or h1.
We start with a reasonably favourable position where white already controls some key squares which act as a barrier as the King tries to escape. The King blocks Black from running to the wrong corner at h8.
So…it’s easy isn’t it? Well we will see when we face it on the board..bites nails…
